* weclome to IW?

Welcome to the IW? website, feel free to navigate the journal entries of the students and read about their experiences as they embark on a voyage of self discovery.

Background to IW?
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery was aware that it is not fully meeting the needs of Black and Asian women. A recent consultation exercise at a women-only event to celebrate International Women’s Day revealed that there was a demand for learning related to the museum’s collections in a welcoming environment. The women said that they would like: “Clubs and facilities where women can come together and celebrate womanhood” and “Playgroup and women’s centre with learning opportunities, drop-in classes, and basic learning with progression.”

In answer to this consultation, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery worked closely with I.D.E.A.L. Productions and South Birmingham College to develop informal learning opportunities, backed up by an accredited tailor-made course. Through a series of workshops with educators and curators, the women will have the opportunity to explore the way Black and Asian women are represented in the Museum’s collections. The programme gives students the chance to develop their own projects, using media skills such as website design, video, sound and radio production, with a view to producing a live radio broadcast from the mobile unit.
